Canadian undergraduate system
A bachelor’s degree in Canada, called an undergraduate program, is usually three years (90 credits) or four years (120 credits). In all provinces except Quebec, students enter after high school. In Quebec, students may enter college after grade 11 or complete a two-year pre-university program before a three-year bachelor’s degree. Some colleges and universities also offer transfer programs, allowing students to move from a two-year diploma into the final two years of a bachelor’s degree, provided the institutions have an agreement.
Requirements for a bachelor’s program
- Minimum diploma average of 12 (or equivalent)
- English language score: IELTS 6.5 overall for direct admission; IELTS 5.0 for conditional admission followed by language courses
- Some programs require specific high-school courses. For example, Biology at the University of Ottawa may require language, math, biology, chemistry, and physics in grade 12 with a minimum score of 14, plus IELTS 6.5 with writing 6.0 or TOEFL 86 with writing 22
