Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) lets international students stay in Canada and work full-time after completing eligible studies. It is an Open Work Permit, does not require an LMIA, and is one of the strongest bridges from student status to permanent residence.
Eligibility for a PGWP
- Your program of study must be longer than 8 months
- You must be at least 18 years old
- You must have studied continuously and full-time at a Canadian university or college (no interruption; even authorized leave generally isn't accepted)
- You must hold — or have recently held — a valid study permit
Documents required
- Official transcripts and a formal letter from your Designated Learning Institution (DLI) confirming you met the requirements of your program
- Graduation letter with transcripts
- Institution letterhead confirmation
- Certificate or other proof that you have completed all academic requirements
How PGWP differs from other work permits
PGWPs are LMIA-exempt and issued as open work permits (coded C43). After completing an eligible program of at least 8 months, you may stay in Canada and work full-time.
You do not need a job offer to apply. You may work in any position anywhere in Canada — even a role unrelated to your studies — with limited exceptions for jobs requiring a medical exam (for example working with children or in healthcare settings).
As with all open work permits, PGWP holders can work full-time, part-time, or be self-employed. The program is administered under section 205(c)(2) of Canada's Immigration Regulations.
