Companion Work Visa for a Student's Spouse
If you hold — or are applying for — a Canadian study permit, your spouse and children can accompany you. The spouse may be eligible for an Open Work Permit and school-age children can enroll in Canadian schools.
Spouse open work permit while you study
When a student intends to bring their spouse to Canada, this must be declared on the original study permit application. Once approved, the spouse can receive an Open Work Permit without needing a job offer or LMIA and can work full-time for any Canadian employer for the duration of the studies.
This is one of the major advantages of studying in Canada as a family — the spouse's income helps offset living expenses. If both partners want to study in Canada, each must apply for their own study permit separately.
Documents required for the companion visa
- Valid passport
- Invitation letter
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Completed application forms
- Copy of the principal applicant's study permit
- Biometrics and medical exam if required
- Proof of family relationship (e.g. marriage certificate)
Best time to apply
- Apply after the student's study permit has been approved, then submit the companion applications
- Or submit the student's and family's applications together at the same time
In most cases we recommend applying for the family after the study permit is approved, because it noticeably lowers the risk of a refusal on the companion file.
